Chandanyatra

Sri Madhabendra Puri, the root of unalloyed devotion of Chaitanya Cult, is one of the prominent figure before Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu 's appearance.

After acceptance of Tridanda Sanyas , Sri Madhab traveled all the holy tirthas and at an old age he reached Bridabon. There Sri Gopal Dev made His graceful divine appearance to take seva from beloved sevak- Madhab. One day Sri Gopal Dev ordered him to fetch ‘ Malayaja Chandan ' or the sandals of Malay Hills to put the sandal pest on His Supreme Body to bring down the burning sensation due to the scorching heat of summer. Madhab Puri in great ecstasy started for the eastern country in obedience to the Command.

Walking for a month he reached Remuna at Baleswara district at Sri Gopinath jiu's temple. There after some events he was gifted by Sri Gopinathjiu a pot full of ‘Khira' Prasada, which He kept back after Bhoga. Henceforth Gopinath was titled Khirachora i.e. the thief of condensed milk. There after Madhab reached Purushotam Dham and informed the Divine command. The Royal ministers supplied him with huge volume of camphor and sandal assisted with a Bramhan and a servant to carry the sandal. He also got the royal passport for the state frontiers and ferries.

On returning he revisited Remuna. Sri Gopal Dev appeared in his dream and asked to put the sandal pest on the supreme frame of Sri Gopinath jiu, and by that His Body will be cooled down. Madhab Puri acted as per.

For a month when there is extreme heat Lord Krishna started taking Sandal pest allover His divine body giving His savaks some more scope to serve Him. Thus started the ‘Candanyatra' - from the day of ‘ Akshaya Tritiya ', for 21 days of scorching heat in the summer season. The supreme deity is offered all over the body the floral pest of sandal and He is dressed with dresses and jewelries made out of scented beautiful flowers.

At Sri Gaudiya Math , Baghbazar, Kolkata, thousands of devoted ruches down, despite of their busy life, to get the auspicious glimpse of the Lord dressed with sandal pest and flowers.

The devotees flow with ecstasy to get a chance to serve the Lord with their utmost material effort.
